Tarmac Jones’ Inspirational Funbox Quicktape Volume 1 is my dream list of a project. I’ve always wanted to rap on songs I’ve adored growing up (and some as a grown up) but often felt like I was trudging to catch up with what I thought I was going to/supposed to sound like. Which is to say, rapping and making it sound good has been a journey + it’s taken me a while to live out my artistry with exuberance and confidence. It started out as a “test“ to see if I could ride a Missy Elliott song to the beat of my own drum if you will. One song after another, from high school favorites of ScHoolboy Q to new inspiration like “Fractions” by Nicki Minaj I started to piece lyrics together for a tape that felt like working on a crossword puzzle. I believe the order is, Lip Gloss by Lil Mama, Fractions by Nicki Minaj, Promiscuous by Nelly Furtado, Work It & The Rain by Missy Elliot, La La by Lil Wayne, Collard Greens by ScHoolboy Q, Sing About Me by Kendrick Lamar and Lemonade by Gucci Mane.
